• Inform your security company that you will be away and ask them to respond immediately if the alarm is triggered. Regularly check your alarm system & the backup batteries and ensure it remains functional.
• Leave a spare key with a trustworthy neighbour in case of an emergency.
• Unplug non-essential devices like TVs, washing machines and kettles. This not only protects them from potential load-shedding damages but also saves energy.
• A small leak over a week or two can turn into a flood and result in water damage – turn off your main water supply while you are away.
• Keep high-value items like laptops and jewellery out of sight. Using a safety deposit box or a built-in safe is ideal.
• Refrain from announcing your travel plans on social media. Criminals often scout these platforms to identify unoccupied homes. Instead, share your travel memories and photos upon your return.

Tips for safe driving:

• Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy. Pay special attention to your tyres, brakes and wipers ensuring they function properly.
• Fatigue affects your reaction times and driving ability – when driving long distances, stop for a quick coffee or snack.
• Drive with your headlights on to enhance visibility.
