With the rise of alternative energy solutions like solar power, more households and businesses are installing lithium batteries. While these batteries are efficient and eco-friendly, they also come with fire risks if not properly installed or maintained. At ProVérte, we want to ensure you are well informed about these risks and how to mitigate them. Here are our safety guidelines and advice:
Correct Installation is Crucial: Ensure your lithium battery system is installed and tested by a qualified electrician in compliance with all applicable legislation and manufacturer’s guidelines. Incorrect installation, such as insufficient spacing between the inverter and battery, can lead to overheating and potential fires. Always have a valid electrical certificate of compliance (CoC) and test report available for inspection.
Prevent Thermal Runaway: Thermal runaway is a chain reaction within a battery that leads to rapid temperature and pressure increases. This can be caused by:
- Internal short circuits due to physical damage or manufacturing defects.
- Overcharging and discharging beyond recommended rates.
- Exposure to high ambient temperatures or proximity to heat-generating devices.
- Age and general wear and tear over time.
Storage and Environment: Ensure no combustible materials are stored within two meters of any inverter or battery. This simple precaution can prevent a fire from spreading and causing extensive damage.
Understanding Fire Response: Regular fire extinguishers (CO2, water, and powder) are ineffective against lithium battery fires. These batteries self-oxidize and burn at extremely high temperatures, requiring specialised firefighting methods. Lithium battery fires also emit toxic and flammable gases, making it dangerous to approach without proper protective gear.
Strategic Placement: For optimal safety, consider installing lithium battery systems in a separate building like an outbuilding or garage, or behind sufficient fire walls and doors with at least a 2-hour rating to limit the spread of fire.
By following these guidelines and relying on qualified professionals for your installation you can significantly reduce the risk of lithium battery fires.
